The Polynesian Dance

When discussing Polynesian dance, it's frequently assumed that most of the dances seen being performed are hulas. The Polynesian dance form known as the hula is one of many practiced. Usually, Hawaii, Tahiti, New Zealand, and Samoa are represented in the types of Polynesian dance performed. Hawaiian dance is the type of Polynesian dance that is most well-known. Hula, the Hawaiian word for "dance," is typically distinguished by its slow and beautiful hips and hand movements. This is Hula Auana, a more modern style of hula that frequently features ukulele or other modern music. Hula Kahiko, which uses more forceful gestures and is accompanied by chants or a vocalist playing an ipu, or gourd drum, is considered to be the more traditional kind of hula. Tahiti is where the quick, frantic dancing to drum beats originated. Tahitian Ori, the island's term for dance, is frequently observed in luaus and frequently confused with hula.
